Nitrogen fertilizer helps the wheat tiller (get thicker) as it prepares to break dormancy in a few weeks.  We split fertilizer application into two treatments.  This allows us to get growth "jump started" earlier in the season and reduces the amount of nitrogen that could be lost due to rainfall or evaporation.  This helps prevent the runoff of fertilizer into surface water like rivers, streams and ponds and leaching into groundwater like wells and springs.
